From the outside the Adventure Park looks like a cheesy kids amusement park, complete with Ferris wheel and water slide rising above the canopy of trees. But if you pay the nominal entrance fee and then venture past those elements of the park you will be rewarded with a beautiful array of flora and fauna in the Orchid Garden and Bird Sanctuary section. If you are a fan of bird watching, this sanctuary will provide the opportunity to see most of the birds available in this country in one spot, including many samples of the national bird: the Raggiana bird of paradise. Not only can you see them through the fencing and bars of their enclosures, you can even enter some of the enclosures for a more intimate experience.
They opened one of the enclosures just for me (there were hardly any visitors that day), and I was able to walk around with beautiful birds singing and cawing on branches, some as close as 10-15 feet away. I observed a one dancing on a branch to try and attract the attention of a female nearby… who, unfortunately for our Casanova, showed no interest at all. After a bit, one of the keepers came in and put some fresh fruit cut into small bird-bite sized pieces on a flat bird feeder ceramic plate. Almost immediately, the rim was filled with birds of vibrant colors, and many shapes and sizes picking through the morsels, mere feet away from me.
Most of the enclosures looked old and plain, but they were clean and well kept. It would have been helpful to have more signage to provide details of the birds. Some of the signs that were provided were sun bleached with large parts unreadable. If I were to go back, I would bring a bird book with me, with identifiable pictures.
But no book could capture the visual spectrum of colors that the feathers display, varying as the birds move; nor the sometimes comical gyrations made as the birds try to impress a mate. For this you have to visit a bird sanctuary, and as such go, this one was worth the trip.

Why go?
- The Adventure Park provide up close opportunities to see most of the flora and fauna of Papua New Guinea that you came to this country to see.
What you need to know:
- Open: 9am to 5pm daily
- Entrance fee: I don’t recall, but it was very small
- Feeding times for the birds: 10am to 3pm daily
- Feeding times for the crocodiles: Saturday & Sunday at 3pm
