We were traveling in Georgia (the “other” one… in Asia), and arrived in Svaneti, a region surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains filled with beautiful Alpine-like meadows and imposing sheer snow covered mountains.  My guide had booked, what looked like an interesting farm house bed and breakfast for the night, but it turned out to be down a long, rock and dirt path that had washed out from a previous storm.  So we turned around and headed back into the little town of Mestia.  It was late in the evening, and the few inns were either booked up or closed for the season.  To the guide’s credit, he found a small inn which was closed, but whose innkeeper was persuaded to open a room to put us up.  Since only one room was available, my friend and I stayed there and the guide found accommodations elsewhere.  I don’t require fancy, but cleanliness is a must… at least when options are available.  But there’s an old saying in Tennessee and Texas : beggars can’t be choosers.

The next morning, my friend and I walked down stairs to breakfast.  Since we were the only guests, we had our choice of tables.  The innkeeper spoke no English and our guide had not come back to collect us yet.  We were served a slice of bread with a slice of cheese each… and a cup of coffee.  We were famished, and were trying to ask for more to eat.  They must have eggs that they could easily cook up for us, but who knows the Georgian word for “egg”?  (Now I know it’s k’vertskhi, which interestingly enough also means “turn around”??).   I pulled out a piece of paper and did my best to draw a chicken… with an egg.  Unfortunately, my artwork resembled Picasso more than Rembrandt, but the innkeeper indicated understanding and retreated back to the kitchen.

After several minutes he returned… Eureka!  We found a way to communicate.  He brought ONE fried egg.
