Bremen - Coat of Arms

Germany is the land of castles, forests, mountains and fairy tales, which are spread throughout the country.  Whereas castles, forests and mountains are easily found on a map, fairy tales are usually not associated with a particular location.  An exception is made for the Bremer Stadt Musikanten (City Musicians of Bremen), which pin points the story in the old city of Bremen (or at least on the way to Bremen).  In deed, you can’t help wandering through this beautiful old city with it’s small alleys, colorful houses, and interesting statues and not have your mind wander to the fairy tale stories of old Germany.  Winding up your stroll with a stop at the statue depicting the heroes of the tale just fortifies the connection.

Why Go?Why go?

  • Bremen is a beautiful old city which was first referenced in the 9th or 10th centuries.  It’s small alleys, distinct city quarters, and unique houses will give you plenty of reasons to pull out the camera.
  • It’s clean, safe and offers plenty of hotel and restaurant options.
  • There is plenty to offer for solo travelers, couples and families.
  • It is easily accessible by car, train or plane.

What you need to know:

  • The area you want to spend your time in is called the AltStadt (old city), which is centered near the Bremer Dom (Holy Cathedral of Bremen).
  • The old city area can be easily walked.
  • Don’t miss my favorite quarter: Schnoor (see below).
  • Bremen is close enough to Hamburg to make a long weekend out of a joint trip.  Just take the DBahn (train) to get from one to the other.
  • If you have time in the evening, take the Nightwatchman tour.
SCHNOOR:  The oldest district in Bremen gets its name from the narrow Schnoor Street.  In low German, the word “Schnoor” means string.  The name came either from the craft trade associated with making ropes and nets, or more picturesquely from the way the small houses are lined up and look like pearls on a string.  I’m voting for the latter.  The houses are tall and narrow, and each is uniquely built and dressed as if vying for your attention.
