Getting across to Macau from HKIA airport can be simple with the ferry. You can even bypass Hong Kong immigration, provided that your flight lands and you can arrive at the ferry ticket counter before 9:30pm. A very good write up, which I referenced prior to my trip, is available on Tripadvisor (Macau: SkyPier to Macau (all you need to know) ).
Note that this write up is for the TurboJet ferry. There is also another ferry line named Cotai.
At 9:30pm the ticket counter closes and the employees leave. Due to a late United flight, I arrived at the ticket counter at 9:45pm (instead of the planned 8:30pm), so I had to go with plan “B”.
The TurboJet Ferry runs directly from HKIA until 9:30pm. If you arrive before this time, you can just take the direct ferry and skip all of these extra steps.
Why go?
- Macau is just an hour away from HKAI by ferry. If you have some extra time, check it out!
- These steps outline how to get to Macau if you miss the last direct ferry.
What you need to know (if you miss the last ferry directly from HKIA):
- Get money (HKD) from an ATM. You will need 200HKD for the bus.
- Ask information for the directions to the bus terminal (follow the people leaving the main terminal and take a left outside)
- As you exit the building, with the buses in front of you, look to your left for the ticket window). If you don’t purchase your ticket before getting on the bus, you will need exact bills.
- You want bus A11 to North Point Ferry Pier. I think it runs about every 30 minutes. It is the first queue as you leave the airport building and is clearly marked with “A11” on a sign pole. At the same bus stop there is a marking for a night bus to the ferry pier. Since that bus didn’t run until after midnight, I didn’t wait for it.
- The A11 bus makes 21 stops. You want to get off at stop #4 “Macau Ferry”. The stops are indicated on a screen on the bus and through announcements in both Chinese and English.
- The bus drops you off directly at the terminal.
- Take the escalators to the third floor and then turn right for the ticket counter.
- I was purchasing a ticket from Hong Kong to Macau and the return ticket for the following morning from Macau directly to Hong Kong International airport. For some reason I was able to purchase the Hong Kong to Macau ticket with a credit card, but they required me to purchase the Macau to HKIA ticket with cash. There are ATMs on both the second and third floors of the terminal building.
- Bottom line: Missing the last ferry from HKIA resulted in arriving in Macau about 2 hours later than planned.
Notes about the TurboJet Ferry:
- The ferry is very clean.
- When you get to the gate, immediately before boarding, they will check your ticket and assign you a (seemingly) random seat number with a sticker. On my return trip (after figuring out the system) I asked for a window seat, and the attendant willingly exchanged my first sticker with a window seat.
- In economy, the window seats are rows “A” and “P”. The seats run ABC DEFG HJKL MNP. There are no “I” nor “O” seats.
- The premier seats are up stairs. I didn’t see them, but other than probably nicer seats and a “lounge” (see picture) in the Macau waiting area, the only benefit I saw was that they were able to disembark first.
- The trip was a little choppy, although I didn’t notice anyone for whom it caused any discomfort.
- The immigration process both ways took almost no time (your results may vary).
- If you are taking the ferry back from Macau to HKIA, you should take a ferry that leaves Macau at least 3 hours before your flight.
