Yes, I realize that the heading says “Countries” and Guam is not a country, but a territory of the U.S.
I first traveled to Guam in 2016 and was there for a stop over from 10:30pm to 6pm the following day on my way to Singapore and then Laos. I rented a car, stayed at the Days Inn (for under $50), and toured the island the next day. It’s an interesting place to spend a day, but unless you just want to hang out on a beach, there’s not much more to fill any more of your time.
Why go?
- Guam is a great stop-over point especially if you are a member of the Star Alliance, since United has flights to and through this island.
- It’s like a much less populated and touristy Hawaii.
What you need to know:
- Guam has many of the conveniences of home (U.S.), with many of the same chain stores and restaurants, including T.J. Maxx in case you happen to be heading to Myanmar and forgot your travel shoes at home (just saying).
- The currency is US Dollars.
- Rental cars are easy to come by, and an easy way to get around the island. I rented one for the day and circled the island. You can drive around the whole island in 2.5-3 hours.
- If you are driving around the island, stop off at Jeff’s Pirates Cove for a nice lunch.
